When Levi’s alcoholic father suggests that Levi is so much of a buzzkill that he can’t even get drunk around him, it makes Levi wonder if something like that is actually possible. Could he really cancel out the effect of alcohol and what would happen if he drank it himself? Never having tried alcohol before, Levi hypothesizes that one of three things will happen when he drinks: 1 – He will get drunk just like anyone else. 2 – Alcohol won’t have any effect on him. And 3 – Alcohol will be so incompatible with his body that he will undergo strange and unpredictable mutations. With the predictions set, the only thing left to do is to test his dad’s theory, or as Levi has chosen to call it, The Levi Effect.

With the help of his friend and moonshiner, Billy Bearclaw, they carry out the experiment. What happens next is much closer to option 3 than either of them could have imagined, changing Levi and the small coal mining town of Hamben, Kentucky forever.
